It has been a while since I have taken the time to sit down and write anything. Yes, I am still training – swimming, biking and running! :)
This past weekend was a full weekend of workouts plus some fun family time. Let me tell you all about it.
Friday
LONG
BIKE DAY! I did 92 miles around the
Gallatin Valley with a trip up to Hyalite for a little extra fun (10 miles of climbing for those of
you not familiar with the area). It was my longest bike day so far this year
and it was a perfect weather day. I
rode hard this day – no lolly-gagging which I sometimes do when I have a long
ride. But, Friday I made the decision
before I started that I was going to go as hard as I could all day just to see
what happened with speed, nutrition, psyche, and physical endurance. There were a few times when I noticed myself
not going as hard as I could and I had to remind myself to pick it back
up. It still surprises me that my legs can pedal a
bike for such long distances and when I finished this ride I was giddy with
excitement, giggling, smiling and also a little choked up. It’s so fun!
I
am also my harshest critic. After a few
minutes of excitement I start looking at my stats for the ride and see that my
time up Hyalite wasn’t as good as I thought it should/could be, and I see that my average speed is still
not great so I am a little disappointed with myself. ARGH!
Don’t get me wrong, I am still
grateful that I can ride 92 miles – that never changes! :)

Saturday
Up
bright and early today – need to get two workouts done by 9:30 am because we
were leaving for Billings for our niece’s graduation party.
Out
the door by 5:30 am for a 7 mile run. 7
miles is my longest distance so far but, I have been able to do it twice now
without any hip flexor issues. My
running is going great! It was a
beautiful morning for a run and I got to see a nice sunrise (sorry no pics).
After
finishing the run, I hopped on my bike and headed out to the course my coach
has me use for time trials. The TT
effort was the hardest effort I could manage for about 12 miles. I was pretty happy with my results for this
TT day. With the warmup and cool down,
this ride totaled about 25 miles.
I
was tired when I went to bed Friday night after the long bike ride and I
mentioned to Pat that I didn’t know how I was going to be able to do another
hard bike ride and a run in the morning.
But, somehow I recovered from Friday’s bike ride and was able to put
forth a good effort for both workouts on Saturday. I have to credit my coach for that! Besides providing excellent training plans
and advice, he always reinforces all the ‘extras’ that go into training for an IRONMAN– nutrition, strength/core training, and recovery/rest! Thanks Matt!

Miscellaneous
This light is the best gear purchase I made so far this year. I have been looking for a light for my bike for about a year but, all the lights I found only work on round seat posts. My seat post is an “aero” seat post and the lights won’t fit on it. My coach found this light that fits an aero post and I put it on last week. When I was out on my ride Friday I noticed that more of the cars were moving over, giving me more room as they passed. I think having the light gives drivers a little more time to react and I really appreciated having more space between me and the car as it passed. BEST PURCHASE!

Some of the nieces, nephews and Pat. It was hot in Billings - this bench was in the shade and we were all lined up on it. |
